How to convert WebP images to JPG or PNG and vice versa on Mac

Google developed the WebP image format as an alternative to JPEG and PNG for the web. Google's PageSpeed Insights website speed test service defines it as a "next-generation format" and encourages websites to use WebP (and AVIF) images because they load faster than other popular formats due to their low capacity.

Therefore, many popular websites use the WebP format. So when you download an image online, you may find that the image has a .webp extension at the end of the filename.

If you have problems using WebP images in certain applications, like Photoshop won't allow opening WebP images, then I'll show you the easiest way to convert them to JPG, PNG, HEIC or other formats on Mac.

Convert WebP images to JPG, PNG, HEIC...

Use the quick action menu

Starting with macOS Monterey, Apple integrated an extremely powerful file conversion tool into the Quick Actions menu, here's how you can take advantage of it to convert WebP images to another format.

  • Right-click or hold Control while clicking a WebP image.
  • Select Quick Action - Convert Image.
  • Choose a format: JPEG, PNG, or HEIF.
  • Choose an image size: small, medium, large or actual size.
  • Next, you can keep or remove image metadata by checking the "Keep Metadata" box.
  • Finally, click the Convert to JPEG (or PNG/HEIF) button.

The Finder will convert the WebP image to a JPG, PNG, or HEIF of your choice and save it in the same folder as the WebP image.

Use the preview app

  • Double-click the downloaded WebP image to open it in the Preview app on macOS. Or right-click the image and choose "Open With" - "Preview".
  • Click File in the top menu bar and select Export.
  • Click the Format menu and choose HEIC, JPEG, JPEG-2000, OpenEXR, PDF, PNG, or TIFF depending on your use.
  • Drag the quality bar to the left to reduce image quality, or to the right to maintain image quality.
  • Finally, check the save folder again and click the save button.

The Preview app will convert the WebP image to JPG, PNG or the selected format and save it. Now you can use it almost anywhere because almost all apps, websites and services support JPG or PNG.

Use photo app

If you've added WebP photos to the Photos app on your Mac, here's how to convert them to another format:

  • Select a WebP picture and click File-Export-Export...Picture
  • In the Photo Type menu, choose JPEG, PNG, or TIFF.
  • Next, select an image quality in the Quality row.
  • Click the small arrow next to a photo category to see more options. For example, you can use the Size menu to set the image size to a smaller or custom size.
  • When finished, click the Export button, choose a save folder, and click Export again.

Use an online transfer site

Finally, you can batch convert WebP images to JPG, PNG or other formats using these free online sites on your Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, iPad or Android phone:
